Academia del Este de Los Angeles
Looking for higher education?
Academia del Este de Los Angeles
OUR STORY
The Academia del Este de Los Angeles (AELA) started as a drop in homework and tutoring center in East Los Angeles for students in the community. It provided tutoring for only $2 dollars an hour, a small library, and internet access. Today, the AELA is focusing on ways of increasing parent engagement by working with the families, not just the student. Thus, it assists parents and children to work towards higher education for their family.
WHAT WE DO
At AELA, we hope to promote the necessary education for our clients to meet their life goals. From basic life skills to college readiness, we do it all. Through our various presentations and workshops, we aim to inform the community on important topics such as the process of going to college, the recovery model, and teamwork.
OUR MISSION
Here at AELA, we acknowledge the importance of vocation. We believe that everyone has a calling to live a happy and fulfilling life. We find that education is an important tool towards reaching one's fullest potential and vocation. Thus, AELA concentrates on placing importance on schooling within families in order to help students prosper whenever they are called.
Educator of AELA
Meet AELA's founder Johana Lozano, an educator & scientist with 16 years of experience, dedicated to promoting compassion for students in East LA and neighboring communities of Southern California.
Johana Lozano
I am an Educator with 15 years of work experience serving the people of East Los Angeles, California. I promote students to be compassionate and empathetic, live a life of faith, and practice democracy.I work with students and their families to track grades, emotions, and examine local challenges to identify and resolve issues.I lead organizational development, workload priority, and performance management with families. I build my clients ability to mediate, advocate, and meet with administrators, change agents, policy makers, and senior educational leaders.
My goal is for my clients to be confident and empowering!
In-home Tutoring:
Tired of online classes and need that one on one session in person? We provide the best services possible for in-home tutoring. We will even support you in person during COVID "lock-down" with proper sanitation and social distancing as WHO/CDC recommends. By coming to your residence, Johana is providing a safe and appropriate study environment either outdoors or indoors. Johana will reserve the table when needed, providing guidance for answers to all questions on the spot.(323) 485-8893
OnLine Tutoring (Zoom)
One on one online tutoring from the comfort of your own home. Johana will provide updates for the parents, as well as all of the written notes for the student and parent through email after each session. Sessions are recorded for both the student and parent, and can be viewed by the clients for reference per request.
Technology Literacy
Many families have a computer which children use, where adults may be unaware of the tools they can access to make support easier. Johana assists families by teaching people of all ages useful techniques such as online banking, automatic bill payments, and how to use zoom on the go. AELA also has bill pay set-up available and reminder calls for client convenience when payments are due.
Educational Counseling for Families and Schools
Higher education can be both exciting and scary. Learn some of AELA's best-kept secrets including how to get into top schools without paying an arm and a leg. Johana will walk you through every step of the way, from selecting goals, majors, and classes, to getting into the school of your dreams.
Helping Hand for AELA Students
Growing up as a first generation American, I supported my parents who had immigrated with English as a second language. I am able to translate legal documents, to support with understanding medical documents, and to speak on behalf of my family, often in sometimes inhospitable settings such as hospitals and schools. Our families, like all families, love their children and want to provide them the safest environment. I understand there are other responsibilities in the home besides homework, which is why I may offer support with chores around the home with ethical transparent communication about our work/home boundaries. My work allows students to focus more on school work in order to meet the more urgent demands of giving back to the family.
Cultural Outings
We have gone to amusement parks, museums, local events, community fairs, and more! Please contact me directly for the next AELA opportunities for recreational therapy and cultural enrichment together.
